Hello, brujxs and witches of the world!

I’ve been celebrating the launch of my latest book, LABYRINTH LOST all week. Thank you for all your tweets, posts, and happy book birthday wishes. It means the world to me. So, I’ve decided to have a special giveaway! I painted this skull for my street team. I happen to have more skulls waiting to be painted, and one lucky winner will receive it. It won’t be the same as the one pictured below. It will be 100% unique and just as witchy.

screen-shot-2016-09-01-at-9-46-42-pm

How do you win? That’s easy. All you have to do is SHOW ME YOUR #RESTINGWITCHFACE.

What does a resting witch face look like? I mean, we come in all shapes and sizes. Dark, light, and all the shades in between. To be a bruja, brujo, or brujx in Labyrinth Lost means to have power. Be proud of it. That being said the interpretation is open for all. For example, my #RestingWitchFace looks like this:

rwf-z

Yours could look totally different! Get creative! (I do ask that you double think before you paint your face with traditional sugar skull makeup if it is not your holiday to celebrate.) There are so many options you can do! Witchy makeup, fearlessly fly no makeup, smize circles around Tara Banks, etc. Go out there and do your thing!

CONTEST RULES

  1. Take your picture and post it! You can post it online! Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram! Facebook is fine, but if the post is private, I won’t be able to see it!
  2. The post or picture MUST include the #RestingWitchFace tag. Example: Showing my #RestingWitchFace to celebrate #LabyrinthLost!
  3. Log your entry in the Rafflecopter form below. This will help me verify entries. Yes, all entries will be verified!
  4. More than one entry is allowed, as long as it is not the SAME photo.
  5. Contest starts today and ends on 9/17/16
  6. US & Canada only. Sorry!

Or, Confessions of an Author Four Years After Best Day Ever

380240_401229216576164_1066264456_nFour years ago on this day, The Vicious Deep was published. It was my debut novel. I was 24 and had accomplished the dream of publishing before I was 25. I don’t know why that’s a dream, but when you’re young and there’s one thing you’ve wanted to do your whole life, it needs to happen ASAP.

The Vicious Deep is still the book of my heart. It’s a book I wanted to write because it was the book that I wanted to read. A friend and I were browsing through a bookstore, and I said, “I wanted to read a different kind of mermaid fantasy.” And he said, “So write it.” Like, duh.

That’s it. That’s all it took.

I’d written two novels before this. One when I was 17 and got rejected because what did I know about life in general? At 28 going on 29 I still feel like I know nothing, but that’s another blog post. Back then, my query letter was better than my actual novel. If Yoda had been my mentor, I would’ve left him like Luke did even though maybe I wasn’t ready ,?even though I felt like I was.

Then at 19, I wrote another novel. This one faced the “we already have a book about a Latina coming of age.” That was my first brutal awakening when it came to publishing politics. The good thing is that, even if they weren’t publishing my Latina coming of age, they were at least publishing someone’s Latina coming of age. Even if, like the Highlander, there can only be one of us at a time.

I didn’t write for a solid year after that.

I know. Sadness. “Don’t let The Man keep you down” and all that. I felt like I had stories inside of me. Even now, with 7 traditionally published books under my belt, I still have this paralyzing fear that my stories don’t belong because don’t belong.

Spoiler alert: I wrote again eventually.

I wrote the book that had been waiting for me my whole life (20 years at the time). Tristan Hart isn’t perfect, but he’s mine. In a totally non-creepy way, of course. There’s a lot more to be said about my publishing journey.

Sometimes it feels like the days and years blend together.

Sometimes I can’t remember if an event was last summer or three summers ago. Maybe everything happens in the exact way it’s supposed to. Maybe I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be. If you’re ever feeling like you’re lost in the Galaxy of Publishing, I want you to remember that you are not alone. That’s what’s helped me a whole bunch. In the past four years, I’ve made lasting friendships, met incredible readers, learned from brilliant editors, and wrote HALF A MILLION WORDS. Half a million words = seven brain babies.

If you can’t appreciate that when you hold a novel you hold the carefully sculpted creation that was born out of someone’s squishy brain, then I don’t know if I can help you.

But anyway.

Back to books and writing and anniversaries.

Books have their own journeys. I thought it’d be cool to show you guys some of the older cover comps for The Vicious Deep.

WE HAVE ARRIVED!

1459814_694614657237617_839453627_nNow we’re here!

There are some things that never change after your first book. I’ve had these feeling with each one:

  • You’re always nervous during a book launch. Always. Maybe that feeling changes when you’re Stephen King. I’ll have to ask him.
  • You always feel insecure when you’re drafting. I’m not the kind of author who feels 100% sure of their first drafts. I bask in self-loathing until I edit for the diamond in the rough.
  • You’re going to make mistakes. Take this as you will.
  • You alternate between thinking you’re genius and shit at the same time.

Going forward I want to try some new things like:

  • Write more. Write freely. Write something just for you. I’ve been writing a lot. I haven’t finished a novel a month yet, but I’ve started different ones. They each bring me a different kind of happiness.
  • Don’t compete against others. Our writing journeys are totally unique. Compete against yourself if you must, but envy will get you nowhere.
  • Tweet and Facebook less. The time you spend on social media can be spent writing. I know it’s hard.
  • Be gracious. Publishing is a rollercoaster. Sometimes you’re up, sometimes you’re down, and sometimes both of those things happen in the same day.
  • Julie Murphy wrote a great Facebook about this. “Always say thank you.”
  • Be good to your readers.

Bonus scene from chapter 7

My phone vibrates in my pocket and my eyes go wide when Tyler’s name pops up on the screen. I press my fingertip to my ear as static comes through the speaker. “Ty? Hold on a sec, I have crappy service.” I cover my palm over the edge of the phone. “Hey, I’ll be back out in a minute. It’s my brother.”

“Ollie?” Tyler says, louder. “Can you hear me?”

“Hey, Ty. How’s school?” I smile that he actually took the time to call me back. We have a seriously fucked up relationship. Ever since he left for Los Angeles, I feel like he wants nothing to do with me. Even when I called him hysterical about me and Braden, he brushed it off and practically hung up on me. He knew what Braden was doing and how he was treating me, but seemingly didn’t care.

“It’s good.” His voice muffles and drops out as he talks to someone. “Listen, I have bad news about your—”

“No, you promised me!” My voice rises in anger and I stalk out to the parking lot. “I haven’t seen you in over a year. I miss you so much.”

“I know, I miss you, too. But, my girlfriend wants me to meet her parents in San Francisco. They’re paying. I really like her, Ollie.”

And I’m your sister, asshole.

“It’s my…” I haven’t had a good birthday, ever. “Please, don’t you care about me?”

“Of course I do, and I’m sorry. I promise I’ll make it up to you.” He doesn’t even sound sincere, only a robotic response I’ve grown accustomed to throughout the years. “I’m late for work. I need to go. Love you.”

The line goes out and I nearly smash my phone into the gravel. Black dots from my mascara speckle my wrist as I wipe away the tears. I give up holding the pressure building in my chest as I lean against Kyle’s car and let the tears fly.

“Liv?” Kyle jogs over and wraps me in a hug. “Hey, stop. What’s wrong?”

I don’t care how sweaty and grimy he is from the field. The comfort I’ve been looking for my whole life explodes with his touch. I bury my face into his damp shirt and let out the emotion that’s been bottled up for weeks. I’m so sick of Tyler pushing me away and acting like I’m some random friend from high school. Everyone except Natasha bails on me and I don’t know how much more I can handle.

****

That was pretty rad! Don’t forget to add it to your TBR or go ahead and buy a copy! Make sure you

Make sure you enter the contest for a chance to win a ton of signed books by me, Stacey Kade, Amanda Heger, and more!

Today is the day, people!

LLOTLevel_coverife on the Level is live wherever books are sold! It’s the third book in the On the Verge series.

River Thomas was born a wild card. Her mother left before River hit puberty, and her alcoholic father raised her to have the best poker face in the city, but when he dies unexpectedly, River’s already dangerous lifestyle spirals out of control. Six months sober, she relapses, and the resulting bender ends with her on the run from a guy looking to settle a score.

She wants to be better–needs to be better–before she ends up like her dad. The road leads her to Sun Valley, Montana, where she checks herself into a rehab center. But before her first night, she decides to go for a last hurrah, and the beautiful stranger at the bar is just what the doctor ordered.

She leaves before sunrise, and starts her ninety-day program, still thinking of his face. But her last hurrah with the guy of her dreams is also a counselor and extremely off-limits.

Their attraction is too strong to ignore, and soon she finds herself gambling with the one thing she never thought she would—her heart.

Here are some TRU FACTS about what it took to write this baby.

  1. I learned how to play poker to write some of these scenes. My best friend, Paul, showed me some key games for a scene in The Savage Blue. After that, I had a basic tutorial during a retreat with some amazing authors in France.
  2. Montana is my favorite state. I lived there for a period of time and I keep finding excuses to go back.
  3. Hutch is my favorite of the three heroes of On the Verge.
  4. I wrote the first 10k of this book in a month. The remaining 80k(ish) I wrote in a week.
  5. River has been the hardest character journeys to write because I knew I’d have to put her through some stuff. I constantly want to save her, but at the same time, I know that she needs to save herself. Her journey is hers alone.
  6. I called a couple of rehab centers and was promptly hung up on. Thanks to some key friends, I was able to find some resources.

There’s a giveaway happening until March 4th. If you leave a comment here or the original post, you’ll be entered to win 1 of 8 charms!
