ABOUT THE BOOK:

The Lundgrens own and operate Sigrun: A family restaurant on the shores of Mount Desert Island, Maine. They are a hard working, every day, American family. But like every family, they have their secrets, some stranger than others. The way these secrets unfold may surprise you.

Their tale begins with a familial ease considered unique to most, but their seemingly perfect relationships are ordinary compared to what hides beneath the surface.

From Chapter 10 – Testing the Waters

…“Hey, hey there, Lyla.” Liam tried to be consoling. “We all agree with you, don’t we guys?” The two youngest nodded their heads in silent agreement. “See? We’re all with you on this. This was just a first step. A semi-test. We just needed to stretch it out and see what it could do, what e could do with what we’ve got. We, none of us except for Tillie here, have really had a chance to see what we’re capable of in this department. This was just to see it in action. What is the trouble with that? Are you okay, Lyla? Lyla?” Liam grabbed her arm as she rose.

Lyla levitated. She suddenly straightened into a standing position and brought  Liam up with her. She felt very powerful. Liam felt a surge of energy from her arm. He released her like he’d been shocked. Suddenly, the wind picked up coming off the ocean. The waves crashed into the shore and their blankets got soaked. The tide came in fast. Faster than they had ever seen it. Tillie scrambled around and tried to gather their things while she kept a worried eye on Lyla.

“Lyles! Lyla! What’s wrong? What did we do? Stop it, please!” Tillie shouted as she and Adrian picked up the bag and blankets. She looked as though she was about to cry. Adrian put his arm around her and they took a step back from Lyla and Liam.

The tide rushed in around their feet. It was fast and strong. In and out and
every time it came in, there was a bit more water. Tillie wanted to run. She was scared. Adrian sensed her fear and held her fast.

“It’s going to be okay!” He had to shout over the wind.

The rest of the people on the beach cleared out fast. Fires were put out by the
rushing tide and people scattered upward toward the town. The four of them were alone now on the beach. Liam stood in front of Lyla, between her and the ocean. “Lyla! Stop this! It’s okay! It’s going to be alright!” He shouted at the top of his lungs, but it was as if no one was even in front of her at all. She threw her arms up and looked possessed. Tillie buried her head into Adrian’s shoulder and wept. Adrian dragged her a few more steps back, away from shore.

Liam remembered just then what Lyla had said about Mom touching her arm and ‘bringing her back to earth’. He grabbed both her arms in the air. There was a strike of lightning across the water and a loud crack of thunder just as Liam flew back and landed in the next incoming wave. Lyla also flew back and landed softly in the surf. She was sitting upright and her eyes grew big. Her arms fell by her side and she fell back into the water, unconscious.
Liam was the first to her side and picked her head up out of the water. Tillie
screamed as Adrian ran over to help Liam. The surf calmed down and Liam picked Lyla up out of it and carried her away from the water.

As they walked away from the ocean, it receded to its normal level. The wind
turned steadier and died down. Lyla hung in Liam’s arms like a wet rag doll. Tillie had tears streaming down her face. Her hands over her mouth, she followed silently behind them.

As they reached dry sand, all they could hear was the soft surf and Tillie
muttering, “Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God,” over and over. Liam placed Lyla down in the sand as gently as he could. Adrian stood just behind him, to Liam’s right.

“Is she alright? Is she conscious yet? Tillie, will you please stop?” Adrian turned around and grabbed Tillie’s shoulders. He grabbed so hard she jumped, then was silent. He eased up on his grip looking at her apologetically.

“Oh, God! Oh, God! What happened? What did we do? Did we do this, Ade? Oh, God!” Tillie was properly hysterical now. She went back to her mumbling.

On the lips! Sheeeesh 😛 Um, but seriously? Not 100% sure. I want to say it was either at his house out in the pool or at a family bbq I was invited to. First kiss wasn’t until *after* I’d graduated from high school, mostly because I just couldn’t care less about it back then. Didn’t exactly change my viewpoint on first try 😛

    Hey there,

Great post. I’m a fellow author on the Red Team. Just had to drop you a note for the great chuckle I got over this comment:

“I love magical creatures and bacon. Not in the same sandwich though.”

RIOT! Have a good one and I wish you the best on your writing. 🙂

I honestly don’t remember it which tells me it wasn’t that memorable… Sorry!

My first kiss was at a snow cone stand in the hot summer. I was too young. I love your books and am so excited to see the On the Verge series on the scavenger hunt. Thanks for sharing the bonus content (I couldn’t leave a comment on her blog for some reason). Love you! 🙂
